WHEN the taste team source hand made products, they expect something a bit special, as the term suggests.
Unfortunately this wasn't the case for Falls of Shin's hand made sweet apple chutney. Made for the Sutherland outlet by Chesters of St Andrews it was sweet, yes, too much so, and a very strange consistency.
A look at the ingredients list revealed the culprit. Malt powder had been used. This is a thickening agent.
Why do you want to thicken chutney? The proper way to do it is to boil it down until the excess liquid has evaporated. Then you get a nice consistency. Not a cloying one.
A bit of a let-down, the rest of the jar ended up in the compost.
