Sick vandals need to be caught

VANDALISM in any shape or form is deplorable, but there are occasions when the perpetrators stoop lower than right-minded people can even contemplate.

It is bad enough when people show scant regard for people’s property or possessions.

However, there is something sick about a cemetery becoming the target of vandals.

It is supposed to be a sacred place where loved ones can go to pay their respects and remember lost family members and friends.

The fact that some of the graves may be hundreds of years old is really irrelevant.

Up to 40 gravestones have been toppled and damaged at Elgin Cemetery, largely in the older part of the graveyard.

The cemetery in Elgin has habitually become a target for vandals, and efforts to curb this have proved difficult.

It beggars belief what sick gratification the perpetrators get from causing such devastation.

There will be a financial cost to repairing the damage, and in some cases, the damage might be irrevocable.

However, it is the emotional impact that is more damaging.

Let’s hope the police catch those responsible and they suffer the shame of being dragged through the courts.
