A YOUNG cat had elastic bands tied around its ears and back paws.
The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information following the incident in Buckie.
The charity was contacted by the cat’s owner, who lives in Hendry Terrace, after she noticed the grey and white male cat, Tom, was struggling to walk.
She discovered he had small rubber bands tied around both his ears and his back legs.
Tom had gone out on Saturday morning but failed to return home later that day as expected.
After searching for him, his owners eventually found in their garden at 3am.
Senior Inspector Lesley Crockett said: “When they called Tom, he walked much more slowly than usual and they knew something was wrong.
“Thankfully, the bands were removed before any extensive damage was done. If Tom hadn’t been found they could have cut off the circulation to his paws and ears.
“We don’t think he had gone very far so it’s possible the person who did this to Tom lives locally.”
The family’s vet said that the bands would have caused Tom pain and suffering.
“It’s difficult to comprehend why someone would do this to a defenceless animal and we’re very keen to identify the person responsible,” added Inspector Crockett.
