STEWART Cree has been sworn in as new convener in an Independent/Conservative coalition leading Moray Council.

He was selected unopposed at the first meeting of the local authority held since last week’s election.

As the Independent councillor for Keith and Cullen takes on the civic role, Tory member for Heldon and Laich Allan Wright will become leader of the council.

Councillor Wright was formerly the local authority’s deputy convener.

With 10 Independents and three Conservatives, the new administration does not have an overall majority of the 26-member chamber.

The SNP form the largest opposition group with 10 members.

There are also three Labour councillors who rejected offers from the Independents and the Nationalists to enter coalition.

See Friday’s ‘Northern Scot’ newspaper for full coverage of the local election.
