Elgin late night shopping experiment

SHOPS in Elgin will attempt a late night festive opening in a bid to boost business.

Over 50 retailers have signed up to the initiative by Elgin Business Improvement District (BID).

Shops will remain open to 8pm on Wednesday, December 5.

Jacqui Taylor, Elgin BID manager, said the move was designed to encourage more people to shop locally over the festive period.

Mrs Taylor, who steps down on Friday after nearly three years in the role, urged the community to back the retailers' move.

And her successor, Gill Neill, added: "There will be over 50 businesses open late on Wednesday and that shows people realise how working together and supporting each other can be a real benefit."

Over the last three years Elgin BID has staged a series of themed events designed to attract more locals and visitors into the central shopping area.

That culminated in a large crowd turning out for the Elgin Winter Festival last month when the town's Christmas lights were switched on.
