EMERGENCY services were called to a blaze in central Elgin this afternoon (Friday).

A green Ford Fiesta caught fire outside Dorothy Jack's Ladieswear, at the junction between High Street and Commerce Street.

Firefighters attended at about 2.45pm and the blaze was extinguished just before 3pm. Police officers were also at the scene.

High Street shoppers described thick smoke and flames billowing from the vehicle. "People were keeping their distance, just in case it exploded," an eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said.

Elgin resident Philippa Zawisza was in nearby Costa Coffee with her nine-week old daughter at the time.

"I looked up and, just outside, saw a car that was just massively on fire. There was lots of flames and everyone was evacuated out the back door of the coffee shop on the direction of the staff.

"It was a little scary, just because I was there with my baby daughter. We were right at the window and you worry it could shatter any second," she said.

No-one was hurt in the incident, which is not thought to be suspicious.
