POLICE are investigating after gravestones in Elgin Cemetery were vandalised and toppled over.
According to police, the incident occurred some time between Friday (May 4) and Saturday.
Around 20 gravestones were pushed over in the cemetery on Linkwood Road, but police have said it is not yet known how much damage has been caused.
Investigating officer PC Kenny MacConnachie said: ‘’Elgin Cemetery is a well-maintained cemetery and this is a rare occurrence.
"This is extremely distressing to the families who care and tend to these graves and as such I am very keen to trace those who are responsible."
Last August, the cemetery was targeted by vandals who desecrated 50 gravestones and set a hedge on fire. Police were called after gravediggers found dozens of upturned and damaged stones and crosses.
In March, two Elgin families also reported that items had been stolen from the gravestones of their families in the cemetery.
Police are appealing for information following the latest incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact Grampian Police on 0845 600 5700.
