HOUSEHOLDS and businesses can look forward to faster download speeds following a decision by BT to roll out Next Generation Broadband next year in Elgin.
Moray MP Angus Robertson has welcomed the announcement, which he says will give the public access to speeds "many times faster" than what is currently available.
According to Mr Robertson, the plans for the Elgin exchange in 2013 are likely to be the first in a number of announcements that will see the Government introduce faster broadband speeds in rural areas.
"Next Generation Broadband is critical to ensuring that Moray has the best economic opportunities in the coming years and that ordinary households have access to high speed internet," he said.
"This announcement for Elgin is a commercial decision by BT, which is extremely welcome, and I fully expect to see additional announcements benefitting Moray as the contract for Scottish Government supported work is finalised between the enterprise company and BT.
"With a combination of major private and public investment in the latest broadband technology, we can expect to see major speed boosts for the vast majority of people, including many of our most rural communities."
