MORAY Council has saved £176,000 in one year from introducing a fleet of pool cars.
Members of the council’s audit and performance review committee this week described it as a "good news story", after it emerged that the figure exceeded expectations.
The local authority’s pool car system has 102 vehicles incorporating 66 Vauxhall Corsa cars, 28 Corsa vans, five Smart cars, one Peugeot Ion electric car, and two Vauxhall Ampera hybrid electric petrol cars.
While the service is performing well, council officers told the committee that it could potentially achieve even greater savings.
An option of buying even more pool cars was pitched by officers.
"There may be criticism out there of the pool cars, but the financial saving is there for all to see . . . and it can be looked at further on a spend to save basis," said Buckie councillor Gordon McDonald, the committee chairman.
