MORAY Council still has £140,000 from the insurance payout following the Grant Lodge fire.
The revelation shocked some members of the economic development and infrastructure committee.
A report before councillors at today’s meeting recommended no action be taken other than to ensure the lodge is wind and water tight.
Situated in Cooper Park, Grant Lodge was gifted to the people of Elgin by Sir George Cooper in the early 1900s.
As trustee the council has already breached its duties by not keeping the premises in a good state of repair.
Grant Lodge had been home to the Moray archive when it was severely damaged by fire in 2003.
It is unclear whether the £140,000 actually belongs to the people of Elgin.
