Moray set to share in Olympic fever

MORAY is set for another dose of Olympic fever.

A series of five road races mirroring Olympic events will be staged.

Locals can take part in 10k, 1500 metre, 3000m, 4x400m relay and 5,000 metre event in Buckie, Elgin, Forres and Dufftown from August 4-11.

Gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented to the first three in the male and female events.

Afterwards competitors will be able to watch the Olympic events over the same distances on big screens in community locations.

The races are the brainchild of the Walk, Jog, Run Moray (WJRM) organisation.

The move follows a successful Olympic Flame Trail last month which saw 4,000 people carry a replica torch around Moray.

The official Olympic torch also visited Moray when it passed through Tomintoul.

Nick Brown, chair of WJRM, said: "If we can inspire people through these four events to try to emulate the Olympians that would be great.

"It is not necessarily about producing elite athletes, but getting people interested in athletics and sports, and health and fitness."

Full details of the Moray events can be found in 'The Northern Scot' on Friday and online at www.walkjogrunmoray.org.uk
