Moray to host fiddlers' rally

MORAY is set to welcome musicians from across Scotland to take part in a fiddlers’ rally.

Elgin Strathspey and Reel Society

The Elgin Strathspey and Reel Society will host its annual rally on Saturday, September 15 at Elgin Town Hall.

Now in its 39th year, the concert has on average around 100 musicians on stage, from fiddlers and accordionists to bass players, pianists and a drummer.

Much of the success of the rally has been due to the hard work of long serving musical director Bill Brian, who died last year.

A spokesperson said it was the aim of the rally to maintain the standard of playing and performing that Mr Brian demanded of his players as a tribute to his hard work and dedication to the Moray musical group.

Guest artistes this year include accordion virtuosos Iain MacPhail and Brian Griffin, both well known in the Scottish Music scene as soloists, TV and radio broadcasters and band leaders. They will be accompanied by Maureen Rutherford, originally from Keith, and guest singer Satunum Mcelroy, a regular performer at the rally who travels up from Glasgow.

Elgin Strathspey and Reel Society is always looking for fiddlers, whether someone new to their instrument or a former musician who may be keen to get back into performing or playing.
