A £280 million railway improvements package will give Moray a direct link to Inverness Airport.
Improvements along the line from Aberdeen to the Highland capital will see a new station at Dalcross and another at Kintore, which are expected to open by 2019.
A detailed survey will be carried out along the route before improvements are made to bridges, the track and signalling system to allow for the introduction of half-hourly train services first from Elgin to Inverness then along the entire length of the line.
Work will also see the journey time from the Granite City to the Highland capital cut to under two hours.
