THE cafés at Elgin Library and Forres Community Centre will close at the end of May unless a private firm or social enterprise comes forward to run them.
Moray Council advertised earlier this year for third parties to come in and run the facilities, along with the café bar at Elgin Community Centre.
While someone will be taking on the Elgin Community Centre café, no expressions of interest have been received for the other two facilities.
A spokesman for Moray Council confirmed that they will close at the end of May if no firm interest is expressed in running them, with the six staff employed between the two cafés offered redeployment elsewhere in the council.
Moray MSP Richard Lochhead has urged the council to consider delaying the closure until a way can be found to keep them open.
He said: “The cafés at Forres Community Centre and Elgin Library are both very popular. The staff work hard for their customers and the closures will be a loss to the members of the public who enjoy using them.
He urged people to come forward to run the cafés, both of which are situated next to popular community parks.
“With the new cycle path going past Elgin Library, I can only see its popularity increasing in the future,” he said.
The spokesman said that council leader Allan Wright echoed the MSP’s plea for someone to take on the cafés.
Expressions of interest should be made to Moray Council before the end of May.
