An international panel of experts chose the London structure for the Emporis Skyscraper Award from more than 300 buildings of at least 100 metres’ height and which were completed during the previous calendar year.

Construction of the 306-metre-tall winning building, designed by the architect Renzo Piano, was overseen by Elgin man Peter Savoy, who took charge of work at the iconic London Shard in early 2010 and saw it through to completion.

"Construction of the Shard was complicated by the particularly tight site and, therefore, needed innovative planning," stated the judges in explaining the decision.
