Winter set to decimate football card

THE wintry weather is posing a threat to Saturday’s Highland League card and Elgin City’s Division 3 trip to Berwick.Dancing on ice Buckie players Tony Low and Craig Macmillan battle the snowy surface and the Lossie defence on Saturday.

By Friday morning the frozen conditions had claimed their first victim in the Inverurie v Turriff match, and several others are certain to follow.

Berwick Rangers’ Shielfield Park surface was covered with icy snow, with the likelihood that their match against Elgin would be called off on Friday. The pitch was described as rock hard in places and with more snow forecast a postponement was expected.

Buckie Thistle’s home match against Clach was set to be called off with Victoria Park solid, and similar conditions had placed Forres Mechanics’ clash with Formartine in serious doubt.

There were still slim hopes that Lossiemouth’s Grant Park could thaw out by Saturday so their game against Fraserburgh could go ahead, and all depends now on overnight weather. Keith’s visit to Cove Rangers also had a chance, as the snow was clearing off the Aberdeen side’s pitch but again Friday night conditions could change the picture.

Perhaps the best chance of football being played was at Wick, where Rothes are set to be the visitors.
