Dry (26) needed just one throw to pass the automatic qualifying distance, reaching 71.62 metres to win his section on Monday at Hampden Stadium.

His effort was also third best of the day, behind English pair Nick Miller and Alex Smith who qualified from the other section.

The Burghead athlete, now based in Loughborough, is one of 12 finalists going for the medals in Tuesday’s final.

Fellow Team Scotland members Chris Bennett and Andy Frost also reached the last stage, boosting the home nation’s chances of a podium place.

Dry is determined to go better than his performance at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi four years ago, when he finished sixth.

The former Elgin Athletics Club member was struck down by illness in India and was unable to produce his best performance in the final.
