AN ELGIN boxer has created his own ‘Rocky’ story by landing a dream bout against an Olympic Team GB fighter.

Andrew Smart (19) will take on Commonwealth Games lightweight silver medallist Josh Taylor (23) on March 8 for a crack at Boxing Scotland’s national championships title.

The Elgin Amateur Boxing Club fighter earned his chance at the Scotstoun sports centre in Glasgow on Saturday, beating home favourite Gary Glover (Duries ABC) to record a career-best victory.

In the national semi-finals, Smart will now take on champion Taylor, who as well as clinching silver in Delhi four years ago fought for Britain in the London 2012 Olympics.

The Prestonpans ace is a strong contender for gold at this year’s Glasgow Commonwealth Games, but Elgin ABC head coach Paul ‘Ratch’ Gordon says Smart is a form fighter who deserved his crack at a major title. “The standard of boxing (at Scotstoun) was phenomenal and for ‘Smarty’ to reach that level, the guy has done really well,” said Gordon.

“I’m really pleased for him, and now he’s got a fight against an Olympian and Commonwealth silver medal fighter. This will truly be a Rocky story!”
