300 - Rise Of An Empire
A typically subdued scene from 300 - Rise Of An Empire. Not pictured: mountains of rock hard abs.

Release: March 7

Starring: Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green

Synopsis: Based on Frank Miller's latest graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the visual style of the blockbuster "300," this new chapter takes the action to a fresh battlefield on the sea as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war. This film pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemesia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

Why You Should See It: If we're entirely honest with ourselves, we all kind of love 300 in spite of ourselves. Yes, it's ridiculous – does “THIS. IS. SPARTAAAAAAA” ring any bells? - and yes, it's camper than a Carry On film set during Fire Island. Yet we love it not despite these massively stupid flaws, but because of them. Gerard Butler and his incredible pencilled-in pecs (and the other actors I suppose) gave us a film that, for once, genuinely deserved its accolade as “a fun romp”.

Why should this one be any different? It's got the same art style (as in, somebody playing around with the Hue/Saturation on Photoshop for every scene), and from the trailers it seems to have the exact same attitude to its viewers. I hope you like muscley men going taps-aff hitting each other with swords while Shouting! Every! Line! Because 300: Rise Of An Empire certainly does, and it's utterly fabulous because of it.

(Also, the trailer has a hilariously inappropriate remix of "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath. Oh aye, because the ancient Spartans were mad for their Brummie heavy metal. Don't let anybody say you should change, 300. Ever.)
