This week's movie pick is suspicious of Sean Connery's Russian credentials.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (12A)
Release: Friday 24th January
Starring: Chris Pine, Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Synopsis: In a story taking place prior to the original Jack Ryan stories, Ryan is a young stockbroker working for a billionaire in Moscow before joining the CIA. When the billionaire he is advising frames him for a terrorist plot and kidnaps his wife, Ryan must race against time to clear his name, stop the plot, and save his wife.
Why You Should See It: Jack Ryan films – of which this is the fifth - are always reliably schlocky. You don't need to really think about them, you just sit back and enjoy the tension, the betrayals, the plot twists and the sheer audacity of the casting director of The Hunt For Red October in hiring versitility's Sean Connery to play a Russian (“Yesh, I am from Moshcow.”)
This one is set to prove to be another step forward in this – director Kenneth Branagh, when he isn't being sublime in Shakespeare or taking the utter mickey in giant robot spiders (never forget Wild Wild West ever), has proven a bit of a dab hand at the blockbuster. His adaptation of the Marvel comic Thor was a surprising success, and the trailers for this movie show that Branagh's lost none of his Hollywood magic. Definitely one for everybody to enjoy.
