THE BROKEN RAVENS
With diverse influences ranging from Howlin Wolf to Slayer, the foursome brought these influences together and banged heads to create their own sound. ‘Heavy with a hint of weird’ was on the menu and the songs started flowing. It's a big, bad sound - though nothing shines quite so bright as White Gold. Below drummer Kevin answers a few questions from Margaret Chrystall.
1 How many times have you been to Belladrum? Do you remember your first performance? What’s your over-riding memory of it?
Kevin: I have been to Bellardum twice in the past playing the Seedlings Stage in 2007 and returning to headline the Seedlings in 2009 with my old band Our Lunar Activities. Both times were absolutely fantastic, it was pouring rain the first time, and we went on before Foxface. I remember thanking the sound engineer afterwards and he said he thought I had broken his desk as my snare was so loud. Turned out that I forgot to mic it up and he couldn’t figure out why he couldn’t turn it down and why it was still making a racket with the channel turned off. Was good fun and such a great atmosphere, very different to any other festival I have ever played at.
2 Name your three fave acts seen there and maybe a two-word wee description/ haiku-ette of their performance and why it was so good?
K: Foxface – Never seen anything like them, drummer wore a fox mask, bonkers!
Loyd Grossman – Masterchef’s band!! A woman shouted out that she loved his sauces, he replied:"You have great taste".
The Parsonage Choir – Fifty people on stage, mindblowing!
3 What is your favourite Bella moment ie funniest, saddest camping moment, most romantic encounter, most life-changing music moment etc worst weather, most surreal experience etc
K: My favourite festival moment was opening Killarney Summerfest in Ireland 2005. First time I had ever played a festival main stage and to 50,000 people!! No pressure!! Snow Patrol were headlining and all I could see was people everywhere. It was just amazing, adrenaline pumping, welcoming crowd, just a total life changing experience!
The funniest has to be at Belladrum in 2007. One of my old bandmates woke up in the camping field and it was empty, as Belladrum had been over for quite some time. The stewards that were cleaning up, put him in a wheelbarrow and dumped him at the gates.
4 What one thing would you tell people to take to Bella?
K: An open mind.
The Broken Ravens play Belladrum's Seedlings Stage on Friday. Below is an acoustic version of Scars.
