OK, so this track from Neneh Cherry’s new album Blank Project is not any kind of Pharrell Happy song to have you skipping down the street tipping your Virginia Westwood hat to all and sundry. But though it’s 16 years since Neneh’s last solo album, her new one is doing what she does best – the feisty, unmistakeable Cherry (Buffalo Stance) and the collaboration fan (7 Seconds). Fellow Swedish resident Robyn duets on the mighty Out Of The Black, Four Tet aka Kieran Hebden produces.
Track Everything is stripped-back, edgy, with a grating vocal pulse that starts to drive you crazy (but you’ll miss it on the DJ Ricardo Villalobos: High Blood Pressure Mix). Neneh sounds freaked, cranky, raw and blocking her ears in denial: “Got my fingers in my ears, I can’t hear you/What I can’t hear can’t upset me.”
