IF it has been hard to escape Inverness Opera Company lately, then that is all part of the plan.

From flashmobs in Inverness city centre’s O2 shop and the Simpson’s Garden Centre just out of town to the company’s own promo film with various members popping up to belt out a tune in the most unexpected places — even home is not safe — Inverness Opera Company have been doing their best to go viral all in the name of promoting new show Day & Night.

In the modern digital era, promoting a show is no longer a case of just putting up a few posters, director Caroline Nicol pointed out,

"We’ve had over 900 shares on YouTube and the cast loved doing the flashmobs and the promo film," she said.

"Definitely social media is the way to go."

After a run of "book" shows, most recently last year’s Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical, the company is doing something different — a songs from the shows compilation featuring a host of songs from classic and more modern musicals from Oliver!  and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers to Grease, Avenue Q and Queen's We Will Rock You, as well as a selction from the Andrew Lloyd Webber songbook.

The format has also allowed the company to bring in new talent, such as Grantown's Tom Strang, who is set to have a very shortlived career with the amateur group.

The next time we see Tom performing in Inverness, he might be on the professional stage after being accepted for the prestigious Italia Conti stage school in London, the world’s oldest theatre arts training school.

Taking part in Inverness Opera Company’s new show Day & Night is his first experience of amateur theatre, but one he believes will stand him in good stead for his professional career.

"It’s really helped me with things like singing in a chorus. That’s something I’ve never done before, he said.

"I’ve never done a full show either. It’s just a shame it will be my first and last one with Inverness Opera."

• Inverness Opera Company present Day & Night at the Empire Theatre, Eden Court, from Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th March at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
