The NESS Energy facility is going to take waste from Moray as well as the Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire council areas, reducing the volume going to landfill in the face of strict legislature,

The leaders of all three local authoritis were at East Tullos on the outskirts of Aberdeen for the opening ceremony.

Councillor Kathleen Robertson (Forres, Conservative) said: “The opening of this facility couldn’t come at a better time.

“It ensures we not only meet our legislative obligations, but that value, in terms of heat and electricity, is extracted from our waste.

“As a high-performing recycling authority we’re pleased to have a modern facility that will serve the residents of Moray, and our partner authorities, for decades to come.”

The project has been in a testing phase since February last year, processing a limited amount of waste.

It is now accepting a full capacity of waste, which will amount to about 150,000 tonnes per year from the three councils combined.

In 2021, Moray Council recycled 22,211 tons of waste and sent 20,239 tons to recycle.

Aberdeen City Council first made the business case for the incinerator in 2013, but construction was hit with delays. The facility is managed by EFW Ness Ltd, a subsidiary of Acciona Industrial UK Ltd.

Day-to-day operations are being handled by Indaver UK.
