A BUSY road junction will close on Monday as work continues on Elgin’s £86 million flood alleviation scheme.

The junction of North College Street and Pansport Road will remain shut for four weeks to allow a major sewer pipe to be diverted.

Vehicles will be unable to enter or exit the junction for the duration, although North College Street will remain open along most of its length.

Traffic on Pansport Road will be controlled by traffic lights which will be closely monitored to ensure delays are kept to a minimum.

Keeping the junction open would have resulted in a three-way traffic control and the likelihood of longer delays.

Residents and businesses in the area will be receiving a mailshot advising them of the work.

A Moray Council spokesman apologised for any disruption or inconvenience.

He said: "The traffic lights will be monitored to ensure that lengthy tailbacks are not allow to build up, particularly at busy times of the day."

Although no diversion signs will be in place, there are options for motorists in terms of alternative routes.

The diversion of the sewer and other utilities is a precursor to work beginning on the erection of a temporary bridge over the River Lossie at Pansport.

The temporary bridge will carry two-way traffic and is expected to be in place for at least two years while work on the flood scheme progresses.
