POLICE have arrested four teenagers after more than 50 gravestones were desecrated at a Moray cemetery last week

A total of four youths – two 14-year-olds and two 15-year-olds – have been charged and reported to the Children’s Reporter as a result of the damage that was caused to Elgin Cemetery.

Police had been called to investigate on August 25 after grave diggers found dozens of upturned and damaged stones and crosses.

A hedge that forms part of the graveyard’s boundary was also set on fire.

Elgin policing team Inspector Colin Mowat said: "This was a dreadful act and the community has been rightfully shocked that such an incident occurred in Elgin.

"The hard work put in by my officers was greatly aided by support from the community, media and partner agencies such as education. We are also grateful for the responsible and positive response which we experienced from parents during this enquiry."

Police have said that enquiries are continuing and there may yet be more arrests.
