THE discovery of illegal deer snares in the Buckie area has prompted a warning to dog owners.

A pet dog was found trapped in one of the snares recently, although it was unharmed.

However, a roe deer caught in a similar snare had to be shot.

Grampian Police are investigating the setting of the illegal snares, which was reported by local land managers.

Constable Ian Dormand said: "It has been confirmed that the snares had nothing to do with any legal pest control on the land and that they were found in an area where it was likely they were being set to illegally target deer."

Snares can be used lawfully for targeted pest control. However, there are strict restrictions to their use.

Local landowners are co-operating closely with the police in the investigation.

Constable Dormand added: "The illegal use of the snares and the effects they have had are very concerning.

"The landowners and police will be monitoring the area closely, and we will be working with Grampian Wildlife Crime unit to tackle the problem."

Anyone who lives or exercises their dog in the landward area of Buckie is asked to be vigilant and report suspicious activity or lights in the woodland areas at night.

Information can be reported to Grampian Police on 0845 600 5700 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
