A NATIONAL awards scheme which enables young people to learn new skills and experience adventure has a new development officer in Moray. Gavin Morgan (30) has taken up the post with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme in Moray. Mr Morgan was previously a project co-ordinator with the World Peace Prayer Society in Dumfries and Galloway. He has also worked in Glasgow for Visibility – formerly the Glasgow and West of Scotland Society for the Blind – where he co-ordinated social, educational and recreational activities for young people and adults affected by sight loss. The former graduate of Glasgow Caledonian University began his career with a telecommunications company, where he became a senior sales manager. He has taken part in his own adventure in the past, taking six months out to visit South America, Australia and New Zealand. Mr Morgan, who lives with his fiancée and their eight-week-old son, is based at Lossiemouth Community Centre, from where he will look to build on the success which the award scheme has achieved among young people across Moray. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is open to any young person aged between 14 and 25. "It presents a challenging programme of activities which will help participants to learn new skills and experience adventure and provide a great sense of achievement," he said. "It is also highly regarded by many organisations and employers, and says a lot about the person who has achieved an award." The award has three levels – bronze, silver and gold – and more information is available from schools and youth clubs or by contacting Mr Morgan and his colleague, Karen Forbes, at Lossiemouth Community Centre on 01343 813614. The annual general meeting of the Moray local awards committee will take place in Room X15 at Elgin High School on Monday, June 16, at 7pm, and everyone interested in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award is welcome to attend. |
