THE skilled hands of Moray tradesmen have helped ensure that a Moray art gallery will be able to show exhibits from some of the UK's most famous galleries.

As work on Moray Art Centre's £100,000 gallery space nears completion, local businesses have been praised for playing a helping hand in ensuring the space will be up to standard.

The new gallery – the only one between Inverness and Aberdeen that will be able to borrow work from the UK National Collections – opens to the public on Saturday, May 31.

The Findhorn centre gallery now meets all environmental and security performance specifications required for hosting major curated exhibitions.

It boasts a high security alarm system and a CCTV system, using the latest technology; timber walls lined with metal; windows made of bandit-proof glass and heavy security doors.

Blinds have been fitted to the windows to ensure that the sun can be totally blocked out – necessary when borrowing delicate works of art from antiquity, like Mediaeval and Renaissance drawings from the British Museum and other European museums that it is hoped to show in the future.

High-performance lighting which all have UV filters to protect paintings from direct light, have also been installed.

Randy Klinger, founder and director of Moray Art Centre said: "The Gallery has been built and completed way before schedule, exactly to spec and on-budget and that is a testimony to the local businesses involved. The amazing thing, for me, has been the care, dedication and incredible team atmosphere which they all brought to the project. Even more amazing was that a number of our contractors part-donated their services and in-kind resources.

"All our contractors' work has been of the highest standard and I would recommend them to any individual or company. We are so proud that we have used all local companies and have found all of them to be first class."

The space is currently called Gallery 1 but Moray Art Centre is seeking a possible sponsor for the opportunity to name this premier exhibition space.
