THE search is on for volunteer knitters to click into action and save babies from death.

The Knit One, Save One initiative is being run by Save the Children to make hats for babies in under-developed countries who all too often die unnecessarily from hypothermia. Launching an appeal for help, Mairi McCallum, of the Volunteer Centre Moray, said: "Something as simple as a knitted hat can protect a baby from sudden drops in temperature in countries like Kenya and Tibet. "Knitting a hat is something that can be done at home. It only takes a couple of hours but can make a huge difference to a baby's life." Anyone willing to help should contact the centre on 01343 544104. Support has already been pledged by the Start 2 Shop, a charity craft base for adults with learning disabilities, which also sells knitting supplies. Project co-ordinator Shirley Nicoll said: "This is a campaign that means a lot to me as I have a grandchild who is half Nigerian. We often have knitters coming into the shop looking for something to do and we are pleased to get involved in something as important as this." Finished hats can be dropped off at the shop at 6 Commerce Street, Elgin. |
