An appeal in 'The Northern Scot' by the charity Dreamz 4U to make a wish come true for Grant Alterton (11) from Tomintoul, has seen offers of help come flooding in. Grant, a pupil at Speyside High School, Abelour, suffers from a series of health problems after being born eight weeks premature. He has cerebral palsy and is partially sighted but one of his great loves is the sci-fi TV show 'Star Trek: The Next Generation'. His mum Vicki and her husband Leigh met the charity's founder, Dundee-based Jim Michie, by chance and when he asked if they knew of anyone Dreamz 4U could help, they suggested Grant and said that if he could have a Star Trek-themed room, he would be over the moon. Mr Michie, who has helped over 150 kids from around the country since the charity was launched 15 months ago, turned to 'The Scot' for help and has been delighted by the initial response. The Woodcentre in Elgin has offered to provide materials while art teachers from Fochabers want to help with the redecoration and a reader from America, who saw the story on the Internet, plans to send over a light-up Star Trek picture measuring 3ft by 2ft for Grant's room. Boss of the Woodcentre, Eddie Laing, said: "We saw the story in the paper and decided we would like to help. We have the materials and hopefully can encourage some tradesmen to help out as well. We just wanted to do something for the lad which we think will make a bit of a difference." f.mcpherson@northern-scot.co.uk Related articles: |
