A FORMER Moray minister has been named as the next leader of the United Free Church of Scotland.

Rev Martin Keane will take up his post at the assembly which meets in Perth next June.

Mr Keane, who is minister of St Ninians United Free Church in Stirling, served in Lossiemouth from 1989 until taking up his present charge in 2001.

Born in Glasgow, Mr Keane (44) was educated at the city's Govan High School. In 1986 he graduated with a BA in business studies from Glasgow College of Technology. Sensing a call to the ministry he undertook a BD course at the University of Glasgow, graduating in 1989 and was called to be minister of the Lossiemouth congregation.

He has served the Church as moderator of the Aberdeen and the North Presbytery and subsequently as clerk to the Presbytery of the North and is currently clerk to the Presbytery of the East.

Nationally, he has served as vice-convener of the General Assembly ministry committee and as finance convener. In 2002 he was appointed principal clerk to the General Assembly.

Mr Keane and his wife Margaret have two daughters, a son and a grandson.
