HIGHLAND dancer Natalie Moir has taken perfect steps in the right direction, securing a place in one of the most prestigious competitions in the annual circuit.

The 12-year-old has swept the board at competitions over the past year, earning a spot in a district team competing in the Scottish Area Highland Dancing Finals. She will proudly represent Moray, Kincardine and Deeside at the event at Oban in May – the only Highland dancing team event anywhere in the world. Natalie, who is a pupil of the June Roy School of Dance in Elgin, secured her place in the team of six by winning two major championship events. She lifted the City of Aberdeen Championships title in April and the Granite City Championships in September, both in the under-13 years division. Both titles are confined to dancers who have been born in Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire, or who live there. Natalie qualified because she was born there.
Proud mum, Angela, said Natalie was looking forward to representing the area. "She's done really well. It's hard sometimes to get placed in the top six at these championships, but she had all first places. "Natalie has been dancing since she was about five. We knew right away it was something that she would be good at because she picked it up so quickly. "I used to dance when I was little, so it seemed natural to carry that on and let her go to lessons to see if she would enjoy it. She absolutely loved it," said Mrs Moir, of Bishopmill. Natalie has travelled all over Scotland to compete in Highland dancing festivals, and one day would love to take part in the annual world championships at Cowal in Argyll. |
