IT IS a personal story of triumph over adversity, and one that Andy Wood hopes will inspire others.

The 40-year-old from Elgin was in the depths of despair when he summoned up the courage to enter a competition to win coaching and mentoring, run by 'The Northern Scot'. In the Autumn of 2007, he was jobless, had suffered a relationship breakdown and landed in hospital because his health had deteriorated. He couldn't contemplate the future – and didn't expect to celebrate his milestone 40th birthday. But he was thrown a lifeline when he was specially selected to receive free coaching. With the intervention of a team of specialist practitioners – a counsellor, hypnotherapist, psychologist and life coach – Andy set about turning his life around. The assistance he received lifted him to a new level, restoring his confidence and self-esteem. With guidance and goal-setting, he began to take up regular exercise, started to socialise again and took up volunteering work. Now he is like a new man, boosted by returning to the world of work, taking up a full-time job, and entering into a new relationship, too. Banishing the blues, with the help of coaching and counselling, has transformed Andy's life. And he hopes that anyone who feels in need of support and encouragement in their life will step forward and enter a brand new competition. 'The Northern Scot' has once again joined forces with NB Coaching and Mentoring to offer one lucky reader the chance to find out for themselves the difference that one-to-one support can make. Andy said: "If it could help turn my life around from the state I was in to where I am now, it can certainly help others. Whoever wins, if they are open-minded and take on-board what is put forward, I'm sure they will enjoy the experience. "I would swear by it and recommend it to anyone. I went with an open approach and was willing to take on- board what they said, so it was easier for them to work with me." Everyone can feel stuck in a rut, find themselves at a crossroads unsure which path to take, or feel in turmoil, and that is where specialist personal support can help. Whether it is moving on from a bereavement, entering a new fitness regime or getting ahead in your career, or improving your business, help is at hand.
The winner of our competition will be given the opportunity to undergo a series of sessions to help achieve their personal goal. The prize will be tailor-made to suit the individual and could be worth £500 or more – but have benefits that are potentially priceless. The Moray-based team at NB Coaching and Mentoring are able to help a broad spectrum of people achieve their desires through problem-solving, habit changing, confidence building, setting a clear direction, action planning and ongoing mentoring. They have helped people of all ages – from school leavers struggling to come to terms with what they will do next to people leaving work and preparing for retirement. And they could help you – simply write or e-mail NB Coaching and Mentoring telling them why you feel in need of a personal support programme. The winning story along the coaching path will be charted by 'The Northern Scot'. Nick Brown of NB Coaching and Mentoring said: "We invested in Andy, and it is very difficult to determine how long someone will receive support, but we spent most of a year with him. We obviously wanted a result and did not want him to fall off at the end, and are delighted to see how he has benefited. "You do not have to be in Andy's situation, as we want to help an individual whatever issues they have. "Male, female, young or old, a high- flier or someone in the depths of despair – we will consider the challenge and how to help." TO enter the competition, send an outline of why you would like to start a coaching programme to Dr Nick Brown at nickbcoaching@aol.com or write to him using a maximum of 300 words at Ellieside, Lintmill, Cullen, Buckie AB56 4XQ, making sure that you give your contact details.
