OUR exclusive last week on the plan for a human chain from Elgin to Lossiemouth, as a salute to our armed forces personnel in conflict zones, is, as expected, creating a great deal of interest.

The Hold Hands tribute will also raise money for wounded service men and women through the remarkable Help for Heroes charity.

Started by a husband and wife - parents of a soldier - it has so far donated or pledged more than £50 million to support injured serving personnel returning from the battle zone, many with horrific injuries. Moray has already given generously to the charity, and this is the latest and most innovative way of showing that we care.

The UK death toll in Afghanistan keeps on rising, including this last week an RAF Regiment gunner, from a base in Suffolk. That will have been particularly hard felt by the RAF Regiment at Lossiemouth which is on a six-month tour of duty, protecting the Kandahar airfield.

Moray is closely involved in the hell that is this war zone, so it is all the more important that we support the Hold Hands for Heroes tribute on Sunday, September 12. Watch out in 'The Scot' for details on how you can be involved.

Crowd-pullers need our support

IT'S the season of galas and games, which brings such wonderful colour and entertainment to Moray, for the benefit of tourists and our own local people.

They don't just happen, of course; they require year-round planning by committees of dedicated volunteers, always with an eye on the all-important weather which can have such a telling factor on the scale of success of their event.

The galas and games are another example of the great community spirit that runs through Moray, and we can all play our part by supporting them and the organisers who give so generously of their time and effort.

Well done, and let the sun shine on your event!
