Abbie Howie got a huge cheer at the Moray and Banffshire Heroes Awards when she revealed she’d recently received an offer to study veterinary medicine at university.

The 18-year-old from Elgin High School had to have a leg amputated during 2023 due to a rare form of cancer.

However the teenager’s determined and optimistic nature helped to see her crowned Secondary Pupil of the Year.

Accepting the award on stage, Abbie told the audience: "I just want to say thank-you all so, so much for the votes.

“I also just want to say that I have got an offer to study at Edinburgh University."

Speaking again shortly afterwards, Abbie said: “It means so much to win the award. It's absolutely incredible.'

“I was diagnosed at the end of 2022 with a form of bone cancer called ostiosarcoma. I've come through that now and I'm currently on follow-up scans, so that's brilliant.

“I've tried to put the support I've got from others back into the community and help people with a similar type of cancer.”

She added: “I help with running a support group in Aberdeen and have also talked to several patients who have been diagnosed with the same cancer or are going through the same surgery. I like to put a bit back out there.”

Abbie won the award against strong competition from Buckie’s Kaidey Geddes who is hoping to become a nurse.

Kaidey has raised thousands to support the charities who supported her family following the death of her younger brother Harry as a toddler.
