THE man who led Pluscarden Abbey for nearly two decades has been ordained as Bishop of the Diocese of Aberdeen.

Hugh Gilbert (59) was installed at St Mary’s Cathedral by Cardinal Keith Patrick O’Brien, the Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh.

He was nominated by Pope Benedict XVI in June and succeeds Bishop Peter Moran, who served since 2003.

Having been at Pluscarden for the past 37 years, laterly as Abbot, Bishop Hugh will now lead a diocese which covers around one third of the landmass of Scotland.
