VANDALISM in Elgin’s two multi-storey car parks has prompted Moray Council to close them early on a permanent basis.

The local authority says the car parks at the St Giles Centre and on Batchen Lane, currently open from 7am to 8.30pm Monday to Saturday, will close at 7pm as of October 3.

A council spokesman said it is hoped the change will deter vandals and help the local authority save money on repairs and lighting.

He said the move, which it is estimated will save around £3,000 a year, was agreed by councillors as part of Moray Council’s budget setting earlier this year.

He added that both car parks have suffered from vandalism and graffiti.

The closing time for the two multi-storeys on a Sunday will remain unchanged at 6pm.
