A SUPERB performance by Elgin City saw them dump cup holders Ross County out of the Ramsdens Challenge Cup at Victoria Park.

Ross Jack's side stunned the first division full-timers at Dingwall with a 2-1 win.

An excellent passing display sent a large travelling support home happy.

Goals from Brian Cameron and new signing Stuart Leslie on his debut provided the shock result of the round.

City boss Jack, who was a player and assistant manager at Ross County, declared: "There were no failures for us in any way, shape or form. It was an all round great performance.

"We showed plenty of respect to Ross County but in no way did we fear them. I know we can pass the ball as good as any team.

"This was the best result in my time as manager. The effort, commitment and desire was fantastic."

With no fewer than eight ex-Ross County players in their squad, Elgin were fired up for this encounter.

However, Jack's side got off to the worst possible start when they conceded a goal with just 80 seconds on the clock.

The defence failed to close down Scott Morrison on the edge of the box and his deflected effort found its way into the net.

But City refused to crumble and dug deep. They also began to play some confident football and deservedly equalised eigth minutes before half-time when another new recruit, Graham Beveridge fed Cameron on the edge of the box and he rifled a low shot beyond Michael Fraser.

County came at City at the start of the second half and forced a succession of corners.

Goalkeeper Zander Clark, on loan from St Johnstone, pulled off a good save to deny former Elgin midfielder Iain Vigurs.

Confident City stunned the hosts when they took the lead on 61 minutes.

A quick break saw Ross O'Donoghue play a one-two in the middle of the park with Craig Gunn and O'Donoghue then played a great ball to release Leslie through the middle.

The former Clach youngster kept his cool and shrugged off the challenge of Gary Miller and Jonathan Flynn before rounding Fraser and calmly slotting the ball home.

County pressed for an equaliser and Clark produced another good save and man of the match Daniel Moore, another ex-County player, cleared a Grant Munro header off the line.

However, Elgin defended bravely and in the closing stages sub Craig Frizzel came close to adding a third when he hit Fraser's right hand post when put through on goal.

Match-winner Leslie said: "It was absolutely brilliant, a superb effort from the boys.

"It was a wonderful ball from Rossco (O'Donoghue) and I timed my run pretty well. I knew I had the pace and what I was going to do.

"I waited for the keeper to commit himself before taking it round him."
