GUTTED Elgin boss Ross Jack admits he can't believe how his side failed to win at Stranraer.

The Stair Park side claimed the points with a 1-0 win thanks to a 15th minute goal from Nathan Shepherd.

However, Elgin dominated most of the game but could not hit the target.

Jack told 'The Scot': "We absolutely battered them and had chance after chance but just couldn't take them."

City were missing top scorer Craig Gunn due to an ankle injury but Jack refused to blame his absence for the scoreline.

"I got the reaction I was looking for following the Clyde game and it was an oustanding performance from every one of the players," he said.

"It was a mixture of some bad finishing and their keeper making some lucky saves. Stranraer carried every ounce of luck.

"We passed them to death and must have had about 15 chances to their two."

And Jack refused to point the finger at teenager keeper Zander Clark who let an innocuous shot slip through his grasp for the home side's goal.

"It was a weak shot but big Zander has been absolutely outstanding for us and this is part of the learning process for him." said Jack.

"The 1-0 defeat is tough to take because we had constant pressure throughout the game.

"I am not happy at getting beat but I am delighted with the performance."

Despite the defeat, Elgin remain in the play-of zone, although they have now slipped six points behind leaders Annan Athletic.

They are four adrift of second placed Alloa Athletic, who visit Borough Briggs next weekend.

"If we play like we did today then we will have no fears," said Jack.

City: Clark, Kaczan, Nicolson, Duff, Macphee, Beveridge, Niven, O'Donoghue, Moore, Cameron, Leslie. Subs - Crooks, Calder, Frizzel, Wilson.
