DUFFTOWN player boss Paul Lamberton is hoping that a sickening double break of his left leg won’t spell the end of his illustrious career.

The former Buckie Thistle captain came off second best in a challenge during Saturday’s North Junior Division 1 clash at home to East End.

After suffering a fracture to his left tibia and fibula in the tackle – which resulted in a red card for Lamberton’s opponent – the 32-year-old had to have a pin and screws inserted in his damaged leg.

"I’ve only ever broken my collarbone before, but I knew my leg was broken as soon as it happened. My leg went floppy but I didn’t feel any pain until I was back in the dressing room."

The 32-year-old defender was taken to Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin where he remained until Wednesday, and has been given a 16-week programme of recovery before he can determine if his playing career can continue.

"I haven’t really got it into my head just yet, but when you’ve been playing for as long as I have you obviously want to keep going until you can finish on your own terms.

"I definitely want to come back, but I’m going to be realistic about it as well. There’s probably more than a 50-50 chance at my age that I might not play again.

"I’ll never say never, but, whatever happens, I know I’ve had a good innings."

Dufftown ended up losing the match 5-2, and Lamberton’s brother Stuart was also red-carded in the aftermatch to the incident.

"I can’t really remember an awful lot about the tackle. It’s hard to say that it was a bad tackle, but let’s just say it wasn’t a good one," Paul said.

Lamberton skippered Buckie during an impressive 13-year stint in the Highland League, before dropping down to the juniors two years ago with Dufftown, and becoming their player manager last season.
