MORE than 10 fire engines tackled a series of gorse fires near Covesea Lighthouse which have led to 26 people being evacuated.

The first two engines were on the scene at about 11am on Tuesday.

More were still arriving up to 90 minutes later, although the blazes appeared to be under control by then.

A five mile stretch of road has been cordoned off by the police, and Silver Sands caravan park was evacuated.

A strong westerly wind was blowing dark grey smoke over Lossiemouth at first, then out to sea when the wind direction changed.

Moray Council’s emergency planning group have coordinated a response to cater for the evacuated residents, and council staff are on site at Lossie High to assist those affected.

A further bulletin will be issued following the next meeting of the emergency planning group at 4pm.
