Piping Hot fun in Forres

A TASTE of what is to come at the Piping Hot Forres European Pipe Band Championships will be played out in Grant Park today (Sunday).

A free taster event, in conjunction with title sponsor Benromach Speyside Single Malt Whisky, will see 10 bands from the North and North-east of Scotland, including four from Moray, compete from 12 noon in a special competition as part of the Forres Vintage Vehicle Day.

Bands at grades 1-4, from Fraserburgh to Forres, will compete in the following sections, along with the adult and juvenile drum major competitions: Grade 4 – March; Grade 4 – March, strathspey and reel; Grade 3 – March, strathspey and reel; Grade 2 – Medley. Grade 1 – March, strathspey and reel.

Local bands competing are Forres and District; RAF Lossiemouth; 2622 Highland Squadron RAF, and Elgin and District.

The European Championships will be held in the park on Saturday, June 29, when more than 100 pipe bands are expected to compete. Forres will also stage the event in 2014 and 2015.

Directors and volunteers from organisers, Forres Events Ltd, will be promoting the championships this Sunday at the theme day.

They are looking to sign-up sponsors, fund-raisers and volunteers to help on the day with car and bus parking and ticket and programme sales.

Pin badges promoting the champion­ships are now on sale priced £2.50 at Benromach, all Moray libraries and other local outlets.

They are available in Forres at R&R Urquhart; Beaver Travel; the ‘Forres Gazette’; Tesco; the Co-Op; Northern Fish restaurant; Asher’s; Pearl’s Pet Care; Washington’s newsagents; Falconer Museum; the Ramnee, Knockomie and Cluny Bank Hotels.

In Elgin they can be bought at Gordon and MacPhail and the ‘Northern Scot’ offices.

David Urquhart of Forres Events Ltd said: “We wish the local community to be part of the largest one-day event to be held in Moray - firstly by spreading the word through friends and family; secondly by supporting us financially by buying a badge or several badges, and thirdly, to volunteer to help or just turn up as a spectator on the day."
