SNP takes charge of Moray Council

SNP co-leader Graham LeadbitterTHE SNP took control of Moray Council this morning with Graham Leadbitter becoming the new leader of the local authority.

Cllr Leadbitter (Elgin South) will head up a minority administration which will require the support of non-SNP councillors in order to vote through measures.

He said: "The last few weeks have been a very challenging time for Moray Council, for the staff and the people of Moray.

"Today, however, marks a major change for Moray Council and I am proud to lead a strong, confident team of hard-working SNP councillors who care deeply about the communities that elected them, about Moray as a whole and about the staff and volunteers who deliver services throughout Moray.

"This SNP team is committed to working with others for the good of Moray and delivering stability and sustainability and getting this council back on an even keel."

Shona Morrison (Fochabers/Lhanbryde) has taken over the role as convenor.

The SNP has nine out of the 26 councillors sitting on the local authority.

It has taken control following the withdrawal last month of seven out of eight Conservative councillors from a coalition formed a year ago with Independent councillors.
