Moray Council has earmarked £1.7million to repair bridges this coming year – plus a further £250,000 to combat flooding.

Repairs will be carried out to Foths Bridge in Birnie – one of seven bridges in Moray damaged in hit-and-run incidents during last year.

Several replacement footbridges will also be built in Forres, including one at Sanquhar Loch.

Graham Leadbitter, the leader of Moray Council, said: "Maintaining the road bridge network represents a significant annual cost for the council and it’s concerning to note so many hit-and-run incidents on our bridges.

"However, it’s positive to see the replacement of footbridges in Forres to allow continued access to a number of walking routes in the area."

Moray Council has responsibility for 376 bridges.

Amongst those due to be refurbished this year are Shougle Bridge, Dykeside Bridge, Nether Tomdow, Willowbank and Culach Burn.

In addition, maintenance work will be carried out on the anti-flooding schemes at Aberlour, Rothes, Elgin, Forres, Dallas, Newmill and Lhanbryde.

Work will also done on the culvert for the Burn of Tyock, a tributary of the River Lossie which runs through New Elgin.

Funding for the work was agreed yesterday by the council's Economic Growth, Housing and Environmental Sustainability Committee.
