Elgin Academy pupil Faith Wells, formerly of East End Primary, wins Moray Heroes Primary School of the Year Award

A 14-year-old girl who battled to overcome a cancer diagnosis has said an award win has made her “even prouder” of herself.

Faith Wells, who attends Elgin Academy, was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2022 and said it gave her a new perspective on life.

The teenager, who is now in remission, benefited from a two-and-a-half-year treatment plan, which included six weeks of intensive chemotherapy at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital.

She was nominated for the Secondary Pupil of the Year at Moray and Banffshire Heroes Awards for her “bravery, resilience and determination to find the positive in her situation and her can-do attitude”.

When diagnosed with cancer, Faith was just 11 years old and in primary seven at Elgin’s East End Primary School.

On her diagnosis, she said: “There’s no way to describe it. It comes in waves of bad days and good days, some harder than others.

“But with everyone around me, the nurses, family and friends, it gets easier.”

On her award win, the 14-year-old added: “It means that a lot of people are supportive of me and that makes me prouder of myself.

“Thank you to everyone who voted for me.”

The Secondary School Pupil Award was sponsored by UHI Moray and was presented to Faith by Jacqui Andrews.
