The book, titled Favourite Fables and Stories About Animals, was originally presented to a pupil of East End Primary in the 1800's and was returned to the school 129 years later after it was found in a charity shop in England.

The sender, Amanda Armour from Lancashire, enclosed a letter explaining that she had found the book and decided to return it to the school.

The letter said: "I came across this book in a charity shop and now having read it myself I wondered if the school would like it.

"As you can see, it was presented to a pupil from Elgin East End School on the 28th of June 1894 by the headmaster at the time, L. Matheson.

"Who knows, the pupil it was awarded to back then may even have descendants in your school to this day."

The book given to John Cameron, a student who got first prize in the school's annual examinations in 1894.

Clare Ducrocq, Acting Head Teacher said: "We received a wee parcel one day, with the letter and book inside. We couldn't believe it, it was a lovely surprise.

"I shared it with the children at our assembly and shared one of the stories as well.

"Our Primary 7's have also written a letter back to the lady to say thank you. She lives in Lancashire, it's not even like she's local.

"It's so kind of her to have sent it, she doesn't know the school or anybody here and she took the time and the money to post it to us."

The school plans to display the book so that they can preserve such an interesting piece of East End's history for years to come.

Ms Ducrocq added: "It's just really special and we feel extremely lucky.

"It was really kind thing for that lady to do and lets us have a unique bit of the school's history - to think of that pupil 130 years ago and what the school must looked like back in those days, it's so interesting."
