A further two people were described as “walking wounded”, with one of those reportedly requiring hospital care.

But 17 passengers on board the bus were said to have avoided injury after it crashed into and destroyed a drystane garden wall.

There has been no update on the casualties’ condition.

The A96 was closed at the Newton turnoff between Elgin and Forres for more than five hours.

Traffic Scotland reported at 6:21 pm that the road had reopened.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “The A96 has re-opened in both directions following a crash involving two vehicles which was reported to police around 1pm on Tuesday, 20 May, 2025.

“Emergency services attended and three people were taken to Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin.

“Thank you to road users for their patience.”
