A MORAY woman's commitment to helping vulnerable children across the area has been recognised.

The Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire, Clare Russell, presented Susan Anderson with a British Empire Medal during a special ceremony at Ballindalloch.

Mrs Anderson, who was named in the New Year Honours list, was awarded the honour for services to the Children’s Hearing System in Scotland.

She served as a panel member in Moray for 20 years until the local service joined up with Highland.

Thereafter, Mrs Anderson (71) remained with the Highland and Moray Children’s Panel for a further three years, latterly as convenor, before stepping down last year.

Learning of her honour, she said: "I don’t think this award is just for me; I think it is for all the panel members and is just a way of saying, ‘we respect what you do’.”

Mrs Anderson moved to Moray when her husband Jim, an RAF helicopter pilot, was posted to the area and the couple live in Aberlour.

She described Scotland’s Children’s Panel as “world-class” and said it was an honour to have been part of the organisation.

Across the country, there are 2500 trained volunteer panel members who listen, discuss, and make decisions about how best to protect each child.

Mrs Anderson said: “It is an inspired system. The job satisfaction comes from making a positive change in a child’s life. We don’t always succeed, but in many cases we do.”
