ACTION is finally on the horizon to fix a large sinkhole which had appeared in Barhill Road, Buckie.

Situated just outside the entrance to the cemetery, the sinkhole had originally been reported at the beginning of April but other than warning signage being erected in the area, no action appeared to be on the cards.

Frustration at the situation has seen local councillor Sonya Warren pursue the matter, with Scottish Water now confirming they will take action shortly to fill the sinkhole.

She said: “I’m delighted to learn that moves are afoot to finally fix this sinkhole.

“The sinkhole is quite large and on a very busy road near Seafield Hospital and the cemetery.

“It has taken quite a while to get to this stage, which I’m sure is disappointing for many residents in the area, but hopefully it won’t be long before matters are put right.

“It was getting really frustrating at one stage trying to move things forward and it didn’t seem to to be going anywhere fast.”

Giving an update on the situation, a spokesperson for Scottish Water said: “Our operational team attended site [on Tuesday, May 28], along with a road inspector from Moray Council, to carry out investigations.

“Following this, traffic lights have been put in place at the Barfield Road junction to maintain safety and continue to allow the flow of traffic. Further investigations have been completed today and we are now arranging the necessary repairs. We aim to complete the repair, reinstate the road and remove traffic management as soon as possible to minimise disruption for road users.

“We thank customers for their patience and understanding while this repair is underway.”

A Moray Council spokesperson added: “We’ve been made aware of subsidence around a utility cover at Barhill Road, Buckie, from a number of reports.

“We have passed the matter on to Scottish Water as this is one of their assets and will liaise with them in regard to plans for rectification.”
